  • Dr Abdu Mukhtar

    Dr Abdu Mukhtar

    Director for Industrialisation and Trade Facilitation at AfDB

    Dr. Mukhtar joined the African Development Bank in September 2017 as the Director of the Industrial and Trade Development Department. He oversees the implementation of the Bank’s Industrialization Strategy across the African continent, leading teams in industrial policy, trade development, investment climate, and non-sovereign operations spanning industries and services sectors (ICT, Manufacturing, Mining, Oil & Gas, Real Estate, Private Equity, etc.). He also supports the regions in sovereign operations in these sectors.

    Prior to joining the AfDB, Dr. Mukhtar was the Group Chief Strategy Officer of the Dangote Group of Industries, Nigeria, from 2014-2017. In that role, he assisted the President/CEO in setting overall strategic direction for the Company and overseeing key aspects of the strategic planning processes for the group, business units, subsidiaries and associated companies. He played a key role in driving major activities, projects and initiatives of the Company, including expansion of cement manufacturing into 14 African countries, multi-billion dollar Oil Refinery and Petrochemical Plant, plus key joint ventures in Power, Oil & Gas as well as Agriculture Sectors.

    Dr. Mukhtar holds a Doctor of Medicine degree (MB.BS) from the Ahmadu Bello University School of Medicine – Zaria, Nigeria; A Doctor of Philosophy degree (Ph.D.) in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine from the Boston University School of Medicine; a Master in Business Administration degree (MBA) from the Harvard Business School, and a Master in Public Administration degree (MPA) from Harvard Kennedy School. He also obtained certificates in Leadership and Corporate Governance from INSEAD, Oxford and Harvard Universities. He was an Archbishop Tutu Leadership Fellow and the recipient of several international awards.

    Her Excellency Ms. Astrid Emilie Helle

    Norwegian Ambassador to South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and Madagascar, as well as SADC.

    Her Excellency, Dr Astrid Helle is currently serving as the Head of Mission (Ambassador Designate) for the Norwegian Embassy in Pretoria, South Africa. Previously, HE Dr Helle served as the Permanent Representative of Norway to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, France. HE Dr Helle is an enthusiastic proponent for gender equality, and as such has held the position of Deputy Director General (Head of Section) for UN Policy and Gender Equality.
    HE Dr Helle completed her PhD on Norway and European Intergration, d’Etudes Politiques, in Paris.

    Mr. Malik is currently the CEO of Arise has extensive experience and knowledge in the investment and financial services sector in Africa. He joined Norfund as an Investment Director in 2003, where he was instrumental in promoting Norwegian investments in Southern Africa and the region. He also served as the Head of Department – Financial Institutions and was a part of the Management team of Norfund. Prior to joining Norfund he fulfilled the role of CEO of DBZ (Development Bank of Zambia) and other senior executive positions in ZCCM (Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Limited).

    Mr. Malik who serves on various local and international boards also holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) from the University of Delhi, India and is a qualified Chartered Accountant.

  • Mr. Simbah Mutasa

    Mr. Simbah Mutasa

    Mr. Simbah Mutasa is currently the Regional Director for Southern Africa at Norfund based in Cape Town.

    He started his career at Citi in London in 2007 in the Telecoms, Media and Technology team where he rose from Analyst to Senior Associate. During this time, he advised on over 15 landmark transactions.

    Following the completion of his Master’s in Finance in 2013, he joined the M&A team at Liberty Global. Whilst at Liberty Global he executed transactions resulting in over US$6bn of investment across Europe and Latin America.

    Driven by his passion for Africa Simbah re-joined Citi in 2015 based in Johannesburg firstly as a Vice President and was subsequently promoted to Director in 2018. Throughout this period, he led the execution of transactions totalling over US$10bn across Sub-Saharan Africa.

    Mr. Mutasa holds a BSc (Hons) in Business Mathematics and Statistics from the London School of Economics and a Master’s in Finance from the University of Cambridge.

    Ms. Mpume Zwane

    Divisional Finance Director at Unilever, Expert advisor to the Board of SANA and Chairperson at Business at Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

    A business executive with over 20 years of experience in strategy, leadership, and portfolio management in the financial service industry, after having started her banking career through a Learnership Programme. She held the position of Regional Executive for Bidvest Bank KZN and is currently the Divisional Finance Director at Unilever. Mpume is the Chairperson of Women in Business at Durban Chamber of Commerce and industry, and former Regional Chairperson of Businesswomen`s Association of South Africa.

    Mpume holds a number of qualifications in Finance, Marketing, and Executive Leadership from various universities in South Africa and the United Kingdom.

    Professor Mthunzi Perry-Mason Mdwaba is a serial entrepreneur, businessman, executive and passionate advocate for business in all its diverse forms and across developing and developed nations. He is a fierce defender of skills development, the conditions required for sustainable enterprises, business human rights and responsible business conduct and FoW expert.
    He is the founder, President and CEO of TZoro IBC, an investment and business consultancy, building on his career as an entrepreneur, deal-maker and negotiator. TZoro provides a very niched global strategic advisory service that involves brokering deals, human capital development coaching and mentoring interventions, leveraging the vast networking Mthunzi possesses spanning over 185 countries.

    Mthunzi is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Law at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), and has recently been re-appointed by the Minister of Employment and Labour as the Chairman of Productivity SA Board.
    Globally, he served as the first African since the ILO was formed in 1919, IOE VP to the ILO(187 Member States),Vice-Chairman of the ILO(Geneva, Switzerland)in 2017, Chairman of the IOE Business Human Rights & Responsible Business Conduct Policy Working Group until June 2021 when he did not renew his mandate to launch his campaign for the ILO DG in 2022. He is also a past Member of the Uber EMEA Advisory Group. He is the Chairman of the SANA(South African Norwegian Association)Board.
